Excellent parents can still have problem children, and good children come out of bad homes. But by staying closely involved in your children's lives, even when they don't appear to need you as much anymore, you'll be teaching them the lessons they need to learn to be the successful and happy adults you'd like them to be. Here are some pointers for keeping teens on the right track: 1. Love them. Tell your teens that you love them every day. They may be too embarrassed to return those words at this stage in their lives, but it's temporary. Some day, they're going to remember that you always told them you loved them, no matter what. When they do something wrong, emphasize that you still love them, even if you don't love their behavior. Teens tend to overdramatize when they're yelled at and say, "You don't care about me." Make sure they understand that you can still love someone even if you're not happy with their actions. 2. Don't be afraid to set limits. You don't need to be your teens' best friend. If you feel uncomfortable about them going somewhere, put your foot down. Sometimes, they really want an excuse to tell their friends "no," and what better reason than, "My mom won't let me go!"? Don't be afraid to be the "meanie." It means you care. 3. Get them involved in something outside themselves. Teenagers benefit greatly from attending religious youth groups or community-based teen groups. These groups often place a strong emphasis on thinking about others while having fun. Mission trips and community service opportunities often become some of the greatest experiences of teens' lives and a good lesson in seeing that others have it much worse than they do. 4. Emphasize the importance of family. Kids need an anchor, a sense of belonging to "something." Stress the fact that your family is a team. And encourage your kids to spend time with their extended family, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. Eat dinner together several times a week, and talk about your day rather than watching TV. 5. Make them help out. Your kids may tease you by saying that you wanted kids just so you'd have household help, but don't let that discourage you from insisting that they participate in taking care of the home. Teens are old enough to do their own laundry, clean their rooms, scrub the bathroom, do the dishes, and anything else that you do. You're doing your kids (and their future spouses) a favor by teaching them how to take care of themselves and a household. Don't back down just because they complain or do a shoddy job. All family members should be required to pitch in. And don't give them allowance for things they should be doing anyway, like keeping their rooms neat. Give them cash for extra jobs, like mowing the lawn, washing the car, etc. 6. Respect their choices. Let's face it: Our kids are never going to be the little clones we'd hoped to raise -- people who would act and think exactly as we do! Teenagers are constantly trying to figure out who they are and what they believe. Don't criticize their choice of music (unless it's particularly violent), hairstyle, clothing, etc. Take a look at your old high-school pictures, and you'll see that your own children's experimentation is perfectly normal! Yes, they're still kids, but they want to be treated as adults. Exerting total authority over them is bound to backfire. For the things that are temporary, let them have the choice. Blue hair will grow out. (Tattoos, however, won't. Say "no" to them.) 7. Teach them about future consequences. Kids need to know you won't be taking care of them forever. Express the importance of education to enable them to get a good job. Explain to them how their actions today greatly impact the future. They're not likely to be able to have the things they want if they have a criminal record or lack a high-school diploma. Show them how much a car and a house cost. Go over a monthly budget with your children so they see how much money it takes to feed a family, pay the utilities, provide housing and transportation, and so on. Kids tend to take these things for granted. They need to think about how their parents are able to provide these things, and how they'll be able to do the same when they're adults. Today's world provides many temptations and poor examples for adolescents, but parents are still kids' most important teachers. Your teens need you now, more than ever, to be present in their lives. Boxelder Bugs (Maple Bugs) Invade Homes in Fall

By Jack DeAngelis Boxelder bugs, sometimes called maple bugs, are relatively large insects, about 1/2 long, dark gray in color with red markings on their backs. The bugs are harmless. What makes them remarkable is their tendency to congregate on certain houses in the fall of the year, often in enormous numbers. It truly seems like an invasion -- especially the first time it happens. Here's what's going on. Boxelder bugs (see a color image at www.LivingWithBugs.com/boxelder.html) have one generation a year. Eggs are laid in early summer on maple trees (boxelder is a type of maple).Eggs hatch and the young nymphs feed on maple tree leaves during the summer. They do no apparent harm to the trees. The insects reach adulthood in fall and can fly. Adults abandon the trees on which they developed in search of a place to overwinter. Many insects overwinter. It is not really a state of hibernation, or diapause, but rather simply an inactive stage brought on by low temperature. Once warmed the insects resume activity. Insects seek protected places in which to overwinter. Fall migrating boxelder bugs are attracted to large trees with dense, evergreen foliage like cedars. Trees with deeply fissured bark also are selected. Both must appear to be good overwintering sites. A single large tree might attract hundreds, or thousands, of boxelder bugs from the surrounding area. These bugs are strong fliers so may travel miles from the maple tree on which they developed. We now have a large tree with perhaps thousands of overwintering boxelder bugs -- so far so good. Let's put this tree, full of bugs, near the sunny, southwest side of a house. When the house siding heats up during the day all of a sudden the nice warm house seems like a better place to overwinter than the tree. Presto, the bugs move en mass to the house. Imagine, a thousand, or more (seems like millions!), 1/2 bugs congregating on the outside of your house, around doors, windows and on siding. This actually happens to many people each fall, year after year. What to do. First realize that these bugs are harmless. They don't bite or sting, won't hurt your house nor will they set up permanent residence. But even people who know all this freak out when confronted with all these bugs. Here are some suggestions. The most important thing is to prevent the bugs from getting indoors. If they do gain entry they will likely be around until spring. Repair window screens, caulk cracks around window and door frames and screen soffit vents. Next, wash down aggregating masses of bugs with water spray from a garden hose then clean the siding with soapy water from a hose-end sprayer. A weak solution of laundry detergent is fine for this application. There is some evidence that washing the siding helps to discourage other bugs from congregating. Don't use insecticidal sprays. Insecticides don't work well on these semi-dormant insects and can be messy and dangerous. You may need to repeat this procedure every few days until the number of new bugs starts to drop. On occasion large numbers of bugs will get into the attic or exterior wall voids of a house. Again, these insects cause no real harm but may be a nuisance. They will find a way into the home's interior on warm winter days -- probably the day of your dinner party. In this case it may be necessary to treat the attic and walls with insecticidal dust. Bugs found crawling around indoors should be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Don't reach for the can of insecticide! You may have concluded that the solution to this invasion problem is to remove the big tree. Sometimes this works but sometimes it does not. Sometimes the big tree is in your neighbor's yard. And these would probably not get enough light in the dark winter months. There are three types of window greenhouse options available to the gardener. An exterior, glass or plexi-glass covered box installed over the window itself. A custom made window replacement, or clear glass shelves hung inside the window for the plants to grow on. Any one of these should fit your situation. The exterior glass window greenhouse is the most common. This can be home made, using molding for framework, if desired. If you are handy with tools, or have a friend who is, this type of greenhouse is an interesting project to build. There are kits available, also, which may suit better if you are not the handy type. This type of window greenhouse cannot be used with casement windows, as the windows would not open after it is installed. Heat for this greenhouse can come from the house itself, as the window can be opened a crack to allow heat from the house to infiltrate. A small electric heater could also be used. When the greenhouse is designed, be sure to make some provision for ventilation. The top and bottom should both be hinged to allow them to open and let air rise through it on warm, sunny days. The binomial system that we use today gives each plant a name in two Latinised words: the first is the name of the genus, and the second denotes the species. How To Have An Argument With Yourself And Win

By James Snyder Throughout the years, I'm happy to report, I have learned a thing or two about myself. My only regret is I have not learned more than a few things. I could make a long list of things I have not yet learned in life. My hope is, of course, to shorten this list drastically. Presently, I want to zero in on one thing I have learned, which has stood me in good stead for many years; how to have an argument with yourself and win. I once thought I could argue with my Significant Other and win. It took years to realize (1) women, wives in particular, do not argue like men. (2) Even if I win, I lose, if you know what I mean. In light of this important marital lore, I have long since ceased arguing with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. When sitting in my easy chair, minding my own business, and my wife flies around the corner and stands in front of me with both hands firmly placed on her hips, I immediately say, "It's my fault, Honey, I did it and I'm sorry. I'll never do it again." I don't even try figuring out what I did wrong. Because of this, I have focused on arguing with myself. It is, if I may say so, an art that takes years to master. The key to arguing with yourself and winning is having a good relationship with yourself. This in itself may take years to accomplish and some people, unfortunately, never achieve this in their lifetime. Let me illustrate something that occurred this week. A friend for over 35 years contacted me about his granddaughter living in the area and wondered if I might have some time to visit her. Naturally, I said I would be delighted. I found her address and my wife and I stopped in several times without success. We stopped in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening, but we never found her at home. Then we had a breakthrough; we discovered she was working at a local restaurant. Within a few days, we stopped by the restaurant for lunch and requested her table. She waited on us, took our order, brought our lunch and was a very gracious and wonderful waitress. We didn't want to intrude, so we just had lunch and went home. This past week I had some errands on that side of town, so I decided to drop in for lunch and introduce myself. It was one of those days when the traffic was dreadful. As usual, I was running a little late with my schedule. I happened to look at my gas gauge and noticed I was on empty. I did a little mental calculation and discovered enough money on my person for gas or lunch, but not both. My credit card, attached to my checking account, was "filthy-lucre-challenged" at the time. At this point, I began arguing with myself. I could not get home without getting gas. Just a simple fact of life. It's not that I haven't run out of gas before, for I have. And, it's not like I run out of gas every week, contrary to the opinions of my Better Half, for I don't. My argument went something like this: "This would be a good time to meet her. Just step out in faith and trust God." "No, get gas for the car, you can always get lunch some other day." Because of the traffic, I had plenty of time to debate thoroughly and heatedly both sides of the issue at hand. This went on for about 30 minutes. Finally, I submitted the evidence on hand to God. "Oh God, I can't do both and I don't know which is the right one to do." A peace settled on me and I headed for the restaurant. At the restaurant, I found the young lady was not waitressing, but was the shift manager for the day. When I was seated, I asked for her. Then I didn't know what to expect. I really did not know her and she did not know me at all. She came to my table and I introduced myself. I knew her grandfather, which was an opening for a very delightful conversation. She sat at my table for about 10 minutes and we chatted like old friends. I finished my lunch and the waitress brought my bill. I stared at it for a few minutes and realized after paying for lunch I had a grand total of 6 cents left. Not quite enough to buy gas for the car. I chuckled one of those nervous chuckles when you don't know what's going to happen, but you know you've done the right thing. Then unexpectedly my waitress came to the table, snatched up my bill and said, "Your lunch has been taken care of." And with that, she whirled away leaving me in a semi-shocked condition. Going to the door to leave, the young lady came to see me off. I profusely thanked her for the lunch, and she simply smiled. Driving to the gas station, a verse of Scripture played on my mind.
